This entry-level jewelry making class offers students the basic techniques and building blocks of metalsmithing. During this eight-week course, students will create four projects in sterling silver, crafted like a professional metalsmith. Students will learn layout, sawing, drilling, forging, texturing, filing, polishing, soldering, and basic stone setting, including the correct way to build a heavy bezel setting (never with bezel wire) and setting a stone with a hammer and punch.
Students learn the proper tool techniques and safety practices, allowing individual expression and creativity through metal. Each session students learn about techniques and are introduced to the tools and resources in a modern goldsmithing studio.
The Monday evening Metal I class is taught by Daniel Valencia,; the Thursday morning and evening Metal I is taught by Oleg Vorobev, and the Saturday afternoon class is taught by Jack Hsu.
